Screen Printing

I had a go at screen printing this week. I found it very hard to understand the process before actually printing. But once I started layering on the different colours on the screen it was very satisfying to see the different layers create the image. I made a few mistakes where splodges of ink went where it shouldn't and I didn't end up using all my templates as I felt the images looked better in their simplicity. I printed two images, one of hands holding the base of a basil plant to show the connection between nature and the human body. The second is of a boathouse in Penicuik that caught my eye as it almost blended into the crowds of trees, almost becoming part of the natural surroundings. I hope to reprint them to add more layers and texture.

The calling cards could be any size, shape or material. The idea of creating a seed packet business card came to me instantly. I thought a seed packet would reflect my interest in using sustainable, natural materials and permaculture. I used a rough sketch of my partner Graeme, digging in the garden as a starting point and developed this into a more detailed drawing. I used natural, homemade paints made from turmeric, cumin, foraged berries and paprika mixed with free range organic egg white and water. I bought some lovely recycled, eco card from the nice people at The Edinburgh Art Shop.

The project emphasised the interaction between the characters, in particular the sisters, Dorothy and Phyllis who were often found stitching and gossiping. I focused on recreating the quote by the young Laurie as he wonders at the textile creation his sisters make before visiting Granny Trill, "Enthralled as ever by their patchwork glories, I followed closely behind." This was done through a painting of the sisters proudly holding a colourful patchwork quilt and a focus on incorporating sewing objects in my prints.

The beginning of 2014 saw me finally picking up the paintbrush and painting onto stretched canvas. The project was concerned with contrasts of ageing and new. I looked into how adults connect with their childhood through play and how children and adolescents act older and younger when placed in specific situations. It was interesting to see how children and adults in his project seemed most content when able to impersonate their childlike inhibitions through a prop such as a puppet, toy or a game of dominoes.

This contrasts to the more playful paintings which show life and character through interaction and celebration.

We started at London Marlybone with two places in mind: the Roald Dahl Museum and The Barbican. The Barbican event was the main reason we were visiting London as we had tickets to see Yo La Tengo. "Yo La what now?" Is the reply I received from people who knew nothing of the band. Yo La Tengo apparantly means, "I have it now" in Spanish. Often referred to as an indie, rock band from New Jersey, but I wouldn't hesitate to say they are Yo* much more than that. The musical trio grasped the Barbican with melodies that poised pleasantly with the animated backdrop of cut out trees. The set reminded of the cardboard tree pieces from a High Ho Cherry Oh board game.

The Roald Dahl Museum was equally exciting, nestled in the sleepy town of Great Missiden. Although the weather was being grey and grumbly, the musuem was a delight. Graeme and I measured ourselves against the character height chart, I measured up to Miss Honey from Matilda which very much pleased me and Graeme was Mrs Twit which was a little unfortunate for him. I also sat in a replica of Roald's famous chair and pretended to write a whizzpopping story. Afterwards we visited the gift shop and bought a few souveniers of keyrings and stationery. We then took a walk to Dahl's grave which was decorated with flowers and his favoured yellow pencils.
Short story for The Shrieking Violet fanzineI have been submitting stories, recipes and articles and once a pattern for making your own pumpkin felt toy to my friend Natalie's fanzine; The Shrieking Violet for over 4 years. The Shrieking Violet is a Manchester based fanzine, which includes recipes, travel writings, transport articles and features on personal fascinations. It has recently been recommended by arts and culture blog, Creative Tourist.
My first submission was a poem about a stuffed raggy teddy bear I had made named Mismatched Teddy bear, which is featured in the first issue of The Shrieking Violet in 2009. The most recent Shrieking Violet features one of my short stories named January Blues. It tells the tale of a young girl and her father making gingerbread after Christmas whilst recovering from a great loss. If you live in Manchester you may be lucky enough to pick up a Shrieking Violet fanzine from various creative outlets including The Cornerhouse in Manchester and Oxfam Vintage for free, (although they are in short supply so keep you eyes peeled.)
I am so delighted to have been selected and published for the Reader's recipe swap and hope lots of budding cooks have the chance to follow my recipe.

Here is the link to the site: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/feb/16/readers-recipe-swap-pink

This is light and fluffy with a sharp, tangy taste from the beetroot. It's perfect toasted and spread with homemade chutney. Rebecca Willmott, Lancaster
Makes one loaf
400g strong white bread flour, plus extra to dust
100g spelt flour
1 tbsp fresh yeast
25g butter
2 medium-size peeled and cooked beetroots, finely chopped
A pinch of salt
1 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon or crushed thyme (optional)
350ml water
Oil, for greasing
1 Put both flours in a large bowl along with the yeast and mix. Crumble the butter into the mixture until it resembles fine crumbs.
2 Add the chopped beetroot, salt and sugar and mix thoroughly. You can also add cinnamon or thyme to make it sweet or savoury. Add enough water to make the mixture sticky, then mix until firm.
3 Lightly flour a clean surface and knead the dough for five minutes until it's firm.
4 Return the dough to the bowl, cover and leave for 1½ hours until it has doubled in size.
5 Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4. Knead the dough lightly, place in an oiled loaf tin and leave for 20 minutes, then bake for 50 minutes.
6 Leave to cool for a few hours to let the yeast settle down. Slice and enjoy!
December 2012.

Just before Christmas I took part in a workshop with The Puppet Centre at Battersea Art Centre in London. The Puppet Centre champions and preserves puppetry theatre through means of workshops, festivals, bursaries and by publishing an online magazine: Animations Online. This is regularly updated with reviews from puppetry enthusiasts around the world.
The Critical Voices Project workshop focused on how to write successful reviews for the stage, in particular the art of puppetry. We were are asked beforehand to bring in a review that we loved or hated. I brought in a review from a Country exerpt from The Guardian. Although not stage related the beautiful descriptions and utility of the brambles and the animals dwelling in them gave an alternative look at how something natural can be reviewed.
The workshop also included some guest speakers including the editor of Cabaret magazine, and previous editor of Puppet Notebook, Eleanor Margolies. The workshop included different tips on how to review, such as writing in between intervals rather than during a show. We were thrust into our first assignment that night which was to write a review on the play Midnight's Pumpkin by theatre company, Kneehigh showing at the BAC for Christmas. I found the show very enjoyable to watch even with a critical eye. I think the most useful advice I received was to write naturally, to be critical but not too critical and most importantly to be concise. It is also crucial to think how would the performers or directors may feel reading your review. This is something I considered when re-writing my review on the character of Midnight, who on my first draft I knocked down for being too quiet and dull. After helpful advice from my mentor Eleanor I was able to offer a more constructive and now positive look at how potent Midnight's role was. This was an excellent workshop and I gained a lot from it. I look forward to writing more reviews for The Puppet Centre soon.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The
opening phrase of Midnight’s Pumpkin “Out with the old and in with the new!” exchanges
the traditional tale of Cinderella for a new show biz style of storytelling.
With a dash of pantomime and exuberant narrative including a talking pumpkin, dancing
mice in dressing gowns and live musicians providing a pop soundtrack, Midnight’s Pumpkin shows typical traits of
a Kneehigh production.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The
character of Cinderella, named Midnight, is played by Audrey Brisson .A timid girl dressed
in thick hipster glasses and a stripy jumper<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">. She is given little script but
her bland costume and mouse like gestures powerfully contrast to the slapstick
stepsisters who strut in with artificial accents and artificial wigs. Midnight’s
aerial skills and astounding singing voice also give her character strength and
dynamism which makes her stand out amongst the louder characters.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The
talking pumpkin narrates the story, interacting with the audience, actively
commenting on the stage directions and placing his pumpkin costume on hapless
audience members. The interaction continues during the two intervals when the
wooden crates on stage are opened and audience members become part of the show
by dancing, dressing up and singing with the actors. This gave the show an
almost amateur and slapdash feel but directors Mike Shepherd and Emma Rice’s
focus on participation is particularly strong in bringing the show to life and
smiles were spread across the Battersea hall.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Midnight’s Pumpkin<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"> is a festive and experimental
show. The contrast between Midnight and the exuberant
stepsisters and girlish Prince Charming give Midnight a subtle and human focus. Her movement and outstanding singing voice are able to shine above her lack of dialogue. It does
feel at times the show was trying to fit too much in; with two intervals and
little opportunity for character development, but the show provides a fast
and fun retelling of a classic fairytale by a becoming classic theatre company.

Other workshops on offer included: Make a sock monkey, scrapbooking and print press demonstrations. It was lovely to see generational skills passed down from the elder participants and the children showing them a thing or two in the world of contemporary craft.

I certainly was spoilt! It was my birthday on the 13th of August and I am now 24! It all started in the bustle of Edinburgh's Fringe festival where I performed some of my circus themed poems for the open slam event Flea Circus at the Banshee Labyrinth. I haven't read any poetry in quite some time so it was good to get back into practice. On my birthday I also went to see some lovely tapestries at the National Gallery of Scotland, had a falafel picnic, and saw a new play by my favourite theatre production, Nutshell. Nutshell have a new show premiering at the Fringe this summer; Thread a play about identities, seaside holidays and friendship intrincally woven together by the reapperance of an antique sewing box.

I was a helpful gilrfriend and helped my stage manager boyfriend, Graeme set up for Allotment, another Nutshell production which had a week run at the Fringe in an allotment near Comely Bank Road. Allotment serves freshly baked scones, tea and (sometimes) homemade jam to the audience before the show. If you haven't seen Allotment yet you should get your skates on (and raincoats) as this play is brilliant and currently touring the UK till September. A lovely but dark little play about two sisters and their well kept allotment. It is wholly performed outside come rain or shine.

After my Edinburgh birthday holiday I went to see my mates Steve and Liz in Manchester who threw me a fantastic birthday tea party. Their dining table was adorned with Moomin shortbread biscuits, marinated spicy tofu, baked potatoes and pitta bread, Leon green sauce and a beautiful carrot cake. My presents included a hand crafted Mountain cushion which is featured in Liz and Steve's fanzine, Young Explorer, a fox embroidred brooch made by Liz, and a cute salt, pepper and mustard shaker in the shape of a house and two trees. I also received some homemdae vanilla sugar and a vintage toy pattern, I am intending on making the owl for my sister Lily's 10th birthday! I do not know how I got all these treats home! We also went on a walk around the neighbouring canal near Steve and Liz's to see some of the events at Rochdale canal festival although sadly all the canal boats appeared to be asleep on this day.

In the afternoon we watched my favourite childhood film; Practical Magic,a classic movie starring Hollywood treasures, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as modern day witches in an American suburb.
I then made my way home to Lancaster on the train, my bag full of homemade craft and vanilla delights.threadsandlettershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18174756508816412406noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9183514247200596401.post-67261963080930266142012-08-01T12:13:00.001-07:002012-08-03T11:44:06.566-07:00We Face Forward Fanzine Workshop at The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester

A Fanzine is a self publication, a small magazine themed on topics of interest to you.

I was delighted when asked to run a fanzine workshop in conjuction with the Raw Social events at the gallery inspired by the West African exhibition, We Face Forward which is taking place throughout Manchester galleries and musuems this summer. This exhibition celebrates the links between Manchester and West Africa's colourful heritage and includes a host of exciting and groundbreaking works.

I created my own We Face Forward zine with stitches and writings from the exhibition. The workshop was created to complement the Whitworth's own We Face Forward newspaper available to visitors. This was used as template for participants of the workshop to take inspiration from for their own small self publications. The fanzines were made from A3 paper folded into 8 squares to make a basic 1 paper page 'zine. At the end of the workshop, the fanzines were photocopied at the gallery and have been saved as paper mementos of visitor's responses to the exhibition. Read a reflection of the workshop from the Whitworth blog here

I have named him The LeeUM Monster, he lives in a cupboard under the purple stairs of a fortune teller's cottage. His attributes of scaring include: leering, leeching and loathing. He is lactose intolerant (apparantly) and unfortanately he suffers from longing. Symptoms include a great absence of admiration and love. Cure: A companion of similar mind set.

Neat, huh?

I shall also be sending my little monster to my friend Tina Bueno at her exhibition space in London Fields for the Here is my Heart exhibition it is on 16th 26th September (Private View 17th September, you get apple juice out of odd shaped glasses)- GO SEE! http://www.pharmacyofstories.com/threadsandlettershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18174756508816412406noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9183514247200596401.post-6985248011745630792011-07-20T15:57:00.000-07:002011-07-20T15:57:03.230-07:00Hop on there is room for two
<img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z0hrS-Xs4xI/Tidci0BvrgI/AAAAAAAAAd0/bvCshFW_tJM/s320/DSCF0021.JPG" t$="true" width="320" />

I simply cannot decide on a quirky tag line for this bike made for two.

Sewfly cycle...

Stitch fast, cycle slow

A Cycle fit for two

and sew on..
threadsandlettershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18174756508816412406noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9183514247200596401.post-77927485550536520692011-06-26T12:39:00.000-07:002011-06-26T12:39:18.960-07:00Rotherham Zine LibraryRotherham Zine Library has an extraordinary collection of zines. Mindless Drawings and Stuff by my brother, Harry Deane and Threads and Letters were picked up from the Victoria Baths zine fair this May.
I had been asked to send some work to be exhibited for a new space in The Old Boiler Room in London Fields.
The Pharmacy of Stories is a place of little installations, text, and performance. The Pharmacy runs workshops by the artists included in the exhibition revolving around the theme of prescription storytelling. When entering the pharmacy through the back door of the Boiler Room, (See the door) you will be welcomed with vials of tangy apple juice and shelves of storytelling trinkets, oh and you will not miss the desk of prescriptions where you shall create your own story remedy. Threads and Letters embroidery and books dangled throughout the pharmacy's medicine cabinets, waiting to heal writer's block and thought dullness.
I shall be prescribing some stitch-telling workshops in the near future. It will involve clowns and a mouse tale. Do NOT Watch This space.

I was asked to run a workshop combining fanzines and craft. So 2 weeks before the event I went along to the open day to gather some ideas. The Angel of Purity, who lives in "the best room in the house" defies maturity with her block glass wings and sullen smile. The bold lines and vibrant colours would be perfect for embroidering, I thought.

After coming back from Helsinki the night before I was a little tired, but my fingers were eager to stitch. Over my week long break I had stitched the angel's face and wings, I still have her legs and lily pad to do but she is getting there.
My embroidery workshop took in the kitchen of where the porter would have lived with his family of athlete swimmers. It was here where the stitching of patches took place. The aim of my workshop was for particpants to use the colours and shapes of the stained glass windows to design and embroider their own angel. Some people stitched them into pre made zines, whilst others merly decorated a patch. How tardy of me. The workshop was with Shoestring magazine and held at the Soup Kitchen, Manchester which also stocks threadsandletters. I'm quite into how writing is structured by what it is actually written on so if you look at the pictures you can see I brought these luggage tags for the attendees of the workshop to write on. The exercise was to use words all on the theme of clocks! Yes clocks. Because you see when I went to the Clock makers musuem in London, (Which is very very small) I collected lots of lovely words to do with time. Here are a few... cyclodial cheeks, pendulum, horoligical, beat escapement. I then used these words to theme the workshop.

<h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":"msg"}">Rebecca Aimée Lanyon Willmott is a self publisher, poet, storyteller and textile artist.
A love of storytelling and stitching, is what inspired me to create my publication, Threads and Letters. Handcrafted on cotton paper, it has a traditional book theme throughout reflected in the fonts and framing reminiscent of the first Victorian illustrated magazines. Its contents include: articles on the button collection at Platt Hall, Gallery of Costume, Manchester, embroidery as puppet illustration, activist textiles and patterned poetry.

The fanzine is accompanied by free delicious vegan cakes, lighthouse bookmarks and illustration prints by artist Vicky Willmott and embroidery prints by Rebecca Aimée Lanyon Willmott. We wish to share our love for storytelling, stitching and sketching in a traditional but fun format of book-zines and illustration.
Threads and Letters is printed on card and cotton paper and bound with thread and buttons.
